How to stop living on autopilot and survival mode?

So, how do you step out of autopilot and survival mode?

You don’t need to quit your job, wake up at 5 AM, meditate for an hour, or redesign

your entire life.

You can begin by introducing small moments of awareness into the life you’re already

living.

Here are four practical ways to do that.

Step 1: Notice the patterns you repeat

Start by paying attention to the moments when you act without really deciding to.

Don’t immediately label these behaviours as bad. Just notice them.

Ask yourself:

What do I do automatically when I’m bored, stressed, or tired?

Which parts of my day do I barely remember?

What do I keep doing simply because I’ve always done it?

You can’t make an informed decision about a pattern you haven’t noticed yet.

Step 2: Create a pause between tasks

There’s always another email, another errand, another thing to think about.

So create a pause.

Before moving from work to your evening, take a minute. Before agreeing to another

commitment, consider it.

The pause doesn’t have to change your decision.

The difference is that you’re giving yourself an opportunity to choose rather than

simply react.

Step 3: Put your thoughts into words

Writing gives your thoughts a place to go.

You don’t need to write a beautifully profound insight. Start with what’s actually on

your mind.

Writing can help you organise your thoughts and examine your experiences from a

little distance. The point is to give yourself an opportunity to hear your own thoughts.

Step 4: Decide what deserves your attention next

Awareness is a starting point, not the entire process.

Once you’ve noticed a pattern, ask yourself what you want to do with that information.

Maybe you realise you need to stop checking work messages after a certain time or

you want to spend more time with someone you keep postponing plans with or you

recognise a goal you once cared about no longer feels right.

But when something does need action, identify one realistic next step.
